Welcome to Bristol DAWG

Bristol DAWG is the UK (Bristol) branch of the Cork Dog Action Welfare Group in Ireland.

As a rescue we take in greyhounds and lurchers from Cork DAWG but also help hounds from the UK. We respond to appeals for rescue spaces for greyhounds from trainers in the North East of the country, where welfare is particulalry bad; and we also work with local dog wardens to take in hounds that are found straying in our local area. We have also worked with dog pounds around the country to save hounds that may have been put to sleep.

Below you will find all the latest news from Bristol DAWG. You can also browse our pages to find out more about us, see what dogs we have available for adoption and to learn more about greyhound and lurcher welfare and what wonderful pets these hounds really make.

DAWG is totally commited to helping abandoned and abused dogs like poor Rosie below, now living in a loving home in the UK.

Foster home appeal for Blathnaid

Poor little 8 month old lurcher girl Blathnaid (pronounced Blawnid) was brought into the Cork DAWG sanctuary this week with a broken hip. Sadly there is no chance of saving the leg as it’s such an old injury, and so she has to have it amputated :(

Blathnaid will have the operation tomorrow and she will then go into a foster home in Ireland. However, Blathnaid desperatley needs to find either a foster home or ideally a special forever home in the UK where she can recover from her surgery and get over both her physical and emotional trauma in her short little life.

If you have the time to care for poor little Blathnaid please call us on 07931348498

Ash, Jacob and Rodney at the Tellington Touch Centre

Today we took Jacob the Podenco and our special Rodney to the Tellington Touch Centre near Bath for some healing work and training. One of our foster dogs, the lovely Ash came with us too as he is still a little nervous. The centre, run by the famous animal behaviourist Sarah Fisher, is home to mistreated horses and a wonderful place to bring nervous and mistreated animals such as Jacob and Rodney.

We had a wonderful day and all three dogs made some great progress. Jacob did amazingly well and even let one of the practitioners, Garry, walk and touch him even though he is usually scared of men!!

DAWG dogs out fundraising

We had a busy weekend at the Willowbrook Centre in Bradley Stoke last weekend and raised lots of money for our dogs. Here are some of our dogs needing homes and lovely Max who we rehomed recently, strutting their stuff and making sure plenty of pennies (and pounds!!) got put in the buckets :)

Both Amy and Poppy have since been reserved as a result of people meeting them at this one event :)

Brady’s day out

brady2

Volunteers Gerry and Colin took our beautiful Brady to the Frampton-on-Severn show this Sunday. He had a great day and behaved amazingly well with all the people, children and little dogs. Here’s what they said about him:

Hi Elkie

Thanks for letting us take Brady out for the day yesterday. I think he enjoyed his day out and we certainly enjoyed his company.

If anyone is interested in Brady he really is the sweetest, gentle dog you could ever wish to meet. He walks so well on his lead. We took him to the Frampton-on-Severn Show and there were thousands of people, dogs and all sorts of distractions, and he was absolutely brilliant with everything – we didn’t even need to muzzle him.

If you are looking for a Greyhound with a wonderful loving nature who is a really gent, you will not be disappointed with Brady.

Hope Brady gets a new home quickly – whoever takes him will definitely not be disappointed.

Open day to find dogs new Bristol owners

A Bristol couple who have helped to re-home unwanted and abandoned greyhounds and lurchers have set up a new dog welfare group.

Elkie Lonnkvist and her husband Paul Hopkins got involved with a welfare and rescue organisation in 2006 after taking in their greyhound Ruby.

But when they discovered that kennels and a cattery in Almondsbury were up for rent, they took the plunge and moved in.

As well as providing boarding for pets, the Cat Dee-tails Cattery and Kennels in Woodhouse Down is also home to their Dog Action Welfare Group Bristol – DAWG.

Since moving in, they have re-homed more than 35 dogs. Now Elkie, 29, and Paul, 27, are about to hold an open day to try and find even more new owners and show visitors some of the pets successfully given a second chance.

//

Elkie said: “There are a large number of ex-racing greyhounds and working lurchers in Ireland so we work closely with the Cork Dog Action Welfare Group. Some of the greyhounds have been racers and have come to the end of their careers, while others are too slow to race.”

Their open day in South Road is on Sunday, September 6, from noon to 4pm and will also raise money for their charity work.
